Pilanesburg (Day) Safari

Day 16 : 30 March 2005

Falling Asleep Falling AsleepFalling Asleep

What is going for a holiday in SA without going for the safari huh?
Afterall, aren't I suppose to be living amongst the animals?
Ha!

Rise and no shine. Another EARLY day. We had to report at the entertainment centre at 0615 hours, game drive started at 0630 hours. ME looked a whole lot better that morning and was able to join us on the safari.

The safari turned out to be quite a disappointment. Due to the rain from the night before, the animals had gone into hiding so there were minimal animal sightings. Let's see if I can recall what the big five are - elephant, rhinoceros, leopard... errr... and then my memory has failed again. Basically, it is very rare for one to be able to sight all the big fives in one game drive. The hardest animal to sight is the leopard. We only got as close as seeing the dung of some animal (can't remember which animal!) and seeing an expired leopard track. *yawn*

Pilanesburg is suppose to be one of the biggest safaris in South Africa. There are 3 game drives during the day - 0630 hours, 0900 hours and 1600 hours (there is 1/2 hour difference for game-times between Summer and Winter), and the night safari is at 1900 hours. Game drives duration is 2 1/2 - 3 hours. The price for the day-safari is R230.00 per adult and the night safari is R245.00 per adult.

Sun City offers other outdoor adventures as well, i.e. Elephant Back-Ride Safari, Hot-Air Ballon Ride, Paragliding etc.. If you have loads of dosh to spare then you can feel free to try every damn thing they have to offer in addition to paying an arm and a leg just to stay at the hotel.

In case you are wondering, the most famous safari/game drive in SA is Kruger National Park. Apparently this safari offers the best probability of the Big Five sighting. And being such a popular hotspot, expect to pay a substantial amount to do this Kruger National Park Safari. In addition, one will require Malaria jab and highly-adviseable to plan at least a 3-4 days game drive at Kruger. Don't waste your time doing a day-safari game drive at Kruger. It will most likely end up being a disappointment.

I guess we got unlucky here with the Pilanesburg Safari. But hearsay.... we were the lucky amongst the unlucky. We had a great gaming guide who managed to spice up the otherwise boring safari with shit-sighting and animal paw print sightings. Also, it was said that we were the only group (of 3 groups) who managed to see some animals.

Blame it on the rain....
